What is the difference between developmental editing and line editing?

The primary difference between developmental and line editing is their scope—developmental editing looks at the manuscript as a whole (global), while line editing focuses on improvements at the paragraph or even sentence level (local). If developmental editing is the forest, line editing is the trees.

Within each level of editing, there are particular categories that I focus on. When we collaborate, you can be confident in receiving thorough feedback in all of these areas.

Developmental Editing

Character analysis – Do primary characters undergo sufficient development? Are they
believable and nuanced yet cohesive? Are characters distinguishable through action and
dialogue? Does each secondary character serve a distinct purpose and/or further the plot?

World building – Are the rules of the universe consistent? Are fantastical/invented elements
introduced effectively (i.e. are any mechanics overstated or vague)?

Plot – Is each scene focused, intentional, and synergistic? Are there plot holes?

Themes – Does the story fulfill the author’s intentions? Are the themes thoroughly
explored? How strongly are moral messages communicated?

Tone (Global) – Is there a distinct narrative voice throughout? Is the atmosphere of each
scene palpable and compelling?

Pacing (Global) – Is the story engaging and energized throughout?

Line Editing

Syntax – Is the prose clear, evocative, and enjoyable to read? Are sentence and
word order, word choice, and passive/active voice used effectively? Is it the text rich with concrete imagery and high-energy verbs?

Tone (Local) – Is verbiage consistent on the sentence level? Are the specificities of the
narrator’s voice, relative time period, character, and mechanics of the invented world cohesive?

Pacing (Local) – Do sentences flow seamlessly from one to the next where intended? Are
various sentence types and lengths used to increase energy and texture? Does the text incorporate leaping (skipping from one moment to the next), fragmentation, and sufficient variation? Is momentum maintained?

Book Coaching

Preventative editing for work-in-progress manuscripts.

Have a story idea but are not sure how to begin putting words on the page? Perhaps you’re a chronic “starter” but need extra accountability to finish your draft.

Book coaching is a service for authors who would like editorial feedback before completing their first draft. This can be especially helpful for those who are just starting out and want to boost accountability and avoid common pitfalls.

The service varies depending on the needs of the author and their project. Deliverables may include an outline review, writing plan, editorial meetings on a bi-weekly or monthly schedule, or chapter-by-chapter annotations.

If you’re interest in book coaching, please indicate it in your new client inquiry, and we can create a tailored plan for your manuscript and writing preferences.
